My deer hunting stories for you to enjoy and maybe get some tips from.
OCT1/09. I went elk hunting in the BC rocky mountain Kootenay region for 8 days. When we went in, the weather was around 30 degrees Celsius and we left in the snow. We hunted the area hard looking for elk, but only found a few bulls that were not 6 point herd bulls. We had a large bull cross us in thick timber but could not identify him as a true 6 point bull nor get a clear shot.

Waking up between 4-5am every day to hike up steep terrain in the dark began taking it’s toll along with the late nights coming down the mountain. Flat tires and a cold virus were only adding to the fustration but on day 7 as we were walking out of a drainage I spotted a buck with some does and we instantly dropped to the ground. I continued to glass the buck for a while and could not count 4 points on one side because of the angle he was facing. As the buck was bedding down I thought I saw the fourth point on his side that would make him a legal buck.
I circled around and climbed over top in order to find him where he bedded down. I approached the area I thought he bedded down in, but I could not find him. I then saw a few does staring at me so I took cover and stayed still as the does started to move. The buck stood up and I counted four points on one side then fired. As the buck collapsed 20 yards downhill, another buck popped up and just looked at the fallen buck with his doe. He was a 3×3 and walked right past my hunting partner as I approached the buck I just harvested. He was a nice wide 4×3 and a great consolation to an unsuccessful elk hunt. I was using my Weatherby Vangaurd chambered in .300WM with hand loaded 168 grain Barnes TTSX bullets. The pack out was approximately 4 KM’s but we made it out just fine.
SEPT 5/09.I got this 4×3 mule deer buck from 30 yards with my Bowtech Tribute while spot and stalk hunting the BC interior. The shot looked exactly 30 yards away so I did not even range it. The Goldtip Prohunter tipped with a Montec G5 went right where I was aiming my pin. The arrow made a complete pass through. Unfortunately the buck that we did not get had a much better story. We were on a logging road and a monster buck was just standing on the side of the road. I stopped and my hunting partner started getting his bow ready, the monster buck charged full speed at the truck and tried to run right by the driver side but he stopped and skidded right in front of the truck. He turned broadside and showed me his massive 4×4 frame with stickers in full velvet and disappeared into the bush before I could get my camera on. My hunting partner just had his bow ready as the buck ran into the bush 5 yards from him.
Fall/08. I went out to hunt the interior for a whitetail hunt this weekend with my Father-in law, his Father, and his Uncle. It was good to be out with some new guys hunting in a different area. We stayed at a flee bag motel and ate decent meals at the diner so we had all the comforts of home while we hunted. We were some tough hunters eh!
Anyways, 1 hour into the hunt while driving to look for some areas to hunt, This guy stumbled accross the road and I fed him a 165grain pill from my .300wm, ’twas a free hand shot, roughly 40 yards away, give or take a couple yards. I know it is not a giant whitetail but it was a legal buck in a brand new area we were weekend hunting and I wanted to bring home some meat. It was also the first game animal I harvested with my new Weatherby Vangaurd .300wm.
That buck turned out to be lucky as we hunted the rest of the weekend seeing around 40 deer but only 2 were legal whitetail bucks, and they were on the run when we spotted them through the timber.
The area provided some nice walking trails and open old growth timber with ample feed I would love to try for a bigger buck as we saw 2 – 4×4 whitetails and 1- 4×4 muley along with 2- 2×2 muleys.
